US election: Questioning the candidates

p446

Barack Obama accepted Nature's invitation to answer 18 science-related questions in writing; John McCain's campaign declined. Obama's answers to many of the questions are printed here; answers to additional questions (on topics including biosecurity, the nuclear weapons laboratories and US participation in international projects) can be found at http://www.nature.com/uselection. Wherever possible, Nature has noted what McCain has said at other times on these topics.

Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry

A photo-responsive hydrogelator having gluconamides at its peripheral branches
A newly designed anthracene derivative having gluconamides at its peripheral branches formed a photo-responsive hydrogel. SEM observation of the xerogel showed a network structure consisting of fibrils. Upon photoirradiation ( >300 nm) of the hydrogel, regioselective photodimerization of the anthracene moiety occurred to give head-to-tail photodimers and the physical state changed from the gel to the sol.

Design and synthesis of intrinsically cell-penetrating nucleopeptides†
Nucleopeptides, which are constituted of a-amino acids bearing nucleobases at their side chains, are able to penetrate into cells and to reach the nucleus without cytotoxic effects.

Music of the elements

Santiago Alvarez

Do the chemical elements, Mendeleev or the Periodic Table play any role in the world of
music? Here are a few preliminary notes for an answer to that question, maybe just the
tip of an iceberg. Some suggestions are offered on music that is worth listening to,
although some of the works commented on may require more of a good sense of
humour than musical sensibility from the reader.
