Fig. 7. Photograph of the patterns printed on glass slides by inkjet printing technique. A 50% (V/V) acetic acid water solution in HP 21 cartridge was printed out by one pass on MP530B solution coated glass slide. Patterns immediately formed in 1 s after printing. (A) Separate letters printed on the stand glass slides; (B) contacted O-rings printed on the standard glass slides. All the patterns were computer designed by Microsoft Office software. The letters fixed on the right side of the standard glass slides were used as size control; (C) schematic diagram shows that MP530B in the solution was neutralized and became soluble with pH higher than 8.7, this reaction is revisable with solution pH value adjusted lower than 8.7. This reaction was utilized for the scaffold fabrication by inkjet printer.

Fig. 8. SEM images of the PU scaffold showing, (A) and (B) primary structures at different magnifications show the porous structure with pore size ranging from 10 μm to 30 μm. (C) Secondary structure shows the porous structure with uniform and inter-connective pores, the average size of pores is less than 1 μm. (A) Magnification 400×, (B) magnification 2500×, (C) magnification 20,000×.

Microwave-Assisted Organic Synthesis and Transformations using Benign Reaction Media

Vivek Polshettiwar and Rajender S. Varma

A nonclassical heating technique using microwaves, termed “Bunsen burner of the 21st century”, is rapidly becoming popular and is dramatically reducing reaction times. The significant outcomes of microwave (MW)-assisted green chemistry endeavors, which have resulted in the development of synthetic protocols for drugs and fine chemicals synthesis that are relatively more sustainable, are summarized. The use of emerging microwave-assisted chemistry techniques in conjunction with greener reaction media is dramatically reducing chemical waste and reaction times in several organic syntheses and chemical transformations. A brief historic account of our own experiences in developing MW-assisted organic transformations, which involve various benign alternatives, such as solid-supported reagents, and greener reaction media, namely, aqueous, ionic liquid, and solvent-free, for the synthesis of various heterocycles, coupling reactions, oxidation–reduction reactions, and some name reactions are described.

Terpyridine-Lanthanide Complexes Respond to Fluorophosphate Containing Nerve Gas G-Agent Surrogates
Raja Shunmugam, Gregory N. Tew
The significant problem of nerve gas poisoning requires new methods of detection, which are sensitive and selective. A new G-type agent chemical sensor is reported that exploits terpyridine-lanthanide emission. A detection limit of 6 ppb is obtained and the selectivity for reactive surrogates over a variety of other close chemical analogs is demonstrated.
